Humankind at a Crossroads: Universal Human Rights versus Commercialized Forced Organ Harvesting from Living People

On December 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France. The Universal Declaration was a manifestation of peoples’ wish to learn from the horrors of World War II reflecting a determination to never again allow such horrors to occur. By framing and defining the basic rights of all people, the Universal Declaration represented a commitment to prevent anti-human actions from endangering humankind and eroding the dignity of human life. Yet, as we commemorate the 73rd anniversary of that historic day when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted, the human family is facing exactly what the Declaration tried to prevent: the egregious slaughtering of Falun Gong practitioners and other prisoners of conscience in China for their organs.
